Works begin for SH6/airport roundabout

Update: 10 July 2024

Detour changes planned for State Highway 6 Marlborough roundabout project

NZTA/Waka Kotahi is making a change to planned detour route ahead of the next stage of work beginning next week on a new roundabout on State Highway 6 outside Marlborough Airport.

From 15 July to mid-December 2024, State Highway 6 (Middle Renwick Road) will be closed to eastbound traffic between Jacksons Road and Caldwell Road West. People travelling from Renwick, Woodbourne, or Havelock will have to use a detour when heading to the airport or into Blenheim.

The amended detour route will be trialled for three weeks to ensure it is safe and is being used appropriately.

To ensure traffic can flow effectively, it is essential that people follow the detour. If drivers attempt to bypass the closure points to reach the airport or Blenheim, we will have to revert to the original detour plan.

Work on service relocation and building a new temporary road for people exiting the airport started on 10 June. From 12 July, a new temporary road to exit the airport will be finished.

Power and water service relocation works are being completed before construction of the new roundabout begins next month.

Businesses in the project area will remain open and accessible to the public, and we encourage the community to continue to support them while construction is underway.

Airport Access:

For people wishing to access the airport, the route is via a left-hand turn off State Highway 6 via Tancred Crescent. People exiting the airport should use the left-hand turn onto State Highway 6 through the newly constructed temporary road.

Detour Details:

  • From 15 July to mid-December, SH6 (Middle Renwick Road) between Jacksons Road and Caldwell Road West will be closed in one direction to eastbound traffic
  • Light vehicles travelling from Nelson/Renwick into Blenheim, or the airport will need to detour via Old Renwick Road and Jacksons Road.
  • All light vehicles leaving the airport and wanting to travel into Blenheim will need to take SH6 towards Renwick, onto SH63 and right turn onto Anglesea Street, right turn onto High Street/SH6, onto Old Renwick Road and right on Jacksons Road.
  • Heavy vehicles leaving the airport and wanting to travel to Blenheim will need to take the same route to Anglesea Street, then left onto Boyce Street and onto SH6. Right onto Rapaura Road/SH62, right on Jacksons Road and back onto SH6.

5 June 2024

Following the successful build of the SH6 Bells/St Leonards Road roundabout, construction on the next phase of the project will start on 10 June at SH6 and Tancred Crescent, the entry to Marlborough Airport. Residents and drivers can expect to see shoulder closures, lane shifts and stop/go traffic management through to December 2024.

On 10 June, contractors will begin work to relocate services and build a temporary road for exiting the Marlborough Airport. The stop/go traffic management is in place to 21 June from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. During these initial works, people should plan an extra 15 minutes for their journeys (during peak travel times there may be longer delays).
